Bocce is one of our most popular backyard games and has enduring appeal for people of all ages. Bocce is played with four or eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called the pallino or jack. The game is typically played with 2 to 4 players and there are 2 or 4 balls to a side or team. The balls come in two (or four) colors to distinquish the balls of one team from the opposing team. To start the game, the pallino is thrown onto the playing field by a member of the team that won the coin toss. The player who throws out the pallino delivers the first bocce ball and attempts to place it as close to the pallino as possible. The opposing team then has an opportunity to deliver their balls. The "nearest ball" rule governs the sequence of thrown balls. The side whose bocce is the closest to the pallino is called the "in" ball and the opposing side is the "out" ball. The "in" team is in the winning position. Whenever a team gets "in" it steps aside and allows the "out" team to bowl. The winning team for that round is the team whose bocce is closest to the pallino and wins the round when the "out" team has bowled all of their bocce balls. Complete rules and scoring are included with each set.
One of the great things about bocce, is that the game requires virtually no set-up time and can be played almost anywhere you have a lawn or grassy surface. It is easily portable and can be taken to park for picnics, field day events, barbeques, or any other group get-togethers.
