Tug-of-War is a fun group activity that can be played year-round in all kinds of group settings including gym and PE classes.  Tug-of-War is an ideal activity for gym classes and elementary field day events as well as for youth groups, camps, and other group settings.  To play tug-of-war, you divide the group up into two evenly matched teams, and you center the rope over a marker.  On the command "Go!" both teams pull as hard as they can to try to move the center mark on the rope over to their side.  When the center mark crosses a set point, one team is declared the winner.  If one team clearly dominates a round, try again after having a couple of players trade sides. 

When buying a Tug-of-War rope, make sure that you are purchasing a quality rope that is specifically designed for Tug-of-War games.  Standard manila ropes do not make the best ropes for playing Tug-of-War because these types of ropes can cause rope burn if the rope slips and small fibers can break off of the ropes and can cause splinters.  That is why the best ropes for Tug-of-War are made of naturally soft cotton, or quality synthetic materials such as polypropene ("Unmanila") or nylon.
